Wrapping up 2009!

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Well it’s here, a new year and a new opportunity for a fresh start. 2009 seemed to pass by without my knowledge, yet so much has happened. I started this post with the idea of doing a review of 2009, but looking back is harder then it seems. I guess I was just having too much fun, or was I trying to forget something. The past 2 years of life lessons in Austin have been great, made some good friends and some unforgettable weekends. With all the excitement I forgot my golden rule of moderation, and I have the debt and empty bank accounts to prove it. Ha, but I don’t regret any of it, what is money if not to be spent.

I do have a few things I want to get off my chest, just so I don’t have to talk about them again in 2010. I have met some cowards in the past few months that remind me we should always be respectful of people regardless of how important you think you are. The first coward is a business owner I met while interviewing in Austin. This guy talked a lot of game, had me do a phone interview, worked on some test files (aka free work), and then called me in for a face to face. I come into the office with my game face and ready to talk shop, I was polite, well dressed and on time. The interview went well, lasted over 2 hours and I talked with everyone in the company, all 3 of them (small web firm). I walked out with confidence I had made a good impression. I followed up 2 days later with a thank you email and “looking forward to hearing your decision” which they replied too. Well another week passed and I got no word, so I sent my final email, another short thank you and “looking forward to hearing your decision”, this time no reply. Months later and I have a new job in San Diego now, still no reply. Now I could understand not replying to a resume, or a phone interview, but an in person interview and not giving the person the courtesy of an email or a phone call… very unprofessional. So here small web firm coward, let me write my “not interested” email for you.

Dear Edward,

Thank you for your interest in our company, but we regret to inform you that we decided not to select you for this position. We want to thank you again for your time and the best of luck on your job search.

Thank you,

John Coward

Now was that so hard? Well seemed he could not muster up the words, was almost comparable to getting a text message break up, or the ever hilarious Facebook relationship status change. Guess with all the texting and emails, we forgot how to be people and talk face to face.

The second coward, well I wanted to go into detail, but decided it would be best to just take a lesson from him and not go on a rant.

Well all that crap aside and I am now in San Diego, working for a startup news blog. I am looking forward to what new challenges should come with my new position, and hope to take with me what I have learned from all the talented people I have had the pleasure of working with. So let’s rock this 2010.

The many faces of Edward Meehan

My Clone Army!

So it’s late again, well almost 2am… and I am up in my home office backing up old photos and getting ready to move into my apartment. I have been having one of those self reflection weeks again, damn seems I have a lot of them lately. Well mostly because I am bored again, and need an outlet. Thinking I might start playing paintball again to let off some steam. Well this post was started after looking at all the photos of myself over the years and how I have aged, and I don’t feel like I look that much different over the last 8 years. The photo above starts when I was 20 years old (far left) and moves all the way to recent (far right). WOW, am I growing up… or am I still that kid I was 8 years ago? I sometimes can’t tell the difference, physically and mentally. Ha, if anything I have more responsibility now… a lot more. Have a mortgage, student loans, credit card, and car loans to pay these days… money money money. Damn, think this turned into a money rant, well its late and I am really sleepy.

Listening to some dope hip hop… I sometimes wish I could just stream music straight into my head 24/7 to block the noise outside. I found a new iTunes station that has been playing some of the best beats I have heard in a long time. The station is in the HipHop category or you can visit the website at TrueHipHop.fm for more information. Def worth the time to check it out, it has made my days fly by.

Okay well I always close my post with some stupid comment or Ed-ism so let’s see how you like this one.

Don’t find someone you can live with, find someone who you can’t live without … and if they don’t want you just keep drinking, because there are plenty of fish in the sea… but if they can’t swim away then you can just club them on the head.

Life in 20 something.

Well it’s late, and I always seem to reflect on my past at 1am sitting in my office. Did what I always do, started looking at old photos, thinking of other moments in my life. Have to say I have been really fortunate. Have had many people come and go, but always seems that I pick the good ones to stick around. I am very stoked on the path my life has taken. I am happier now then I can remember, but also very lost… someone told me I’m going thru a “Quarter Life Crises”, could be true.

I am way to busy! Yet I never feel as if I get a whole lot done, but things are being done… just not as efficiently as I would like. Here is a simple breakdown of my day:

  • 7:30 to 8:40 AM – Wake up, get dressed, have a quick bit to eat and head out the door.
  • 8:40 to 9:20 AM – Fight morning traffic to work (Thank goodness my LS is fun to drive).
  • 9:20 to 11:30 AM – Attempt to get some work done, but mostly check e-mails and tighten up loose ends and daily tasks.
  • 11:30 to 12:30 PM – Take a lunch break (but not always an option, depending on my work load)
  • 12:30 to 5:30-7:30 PM – This is when I get most my work done, and working on my 3rd cup of coffee.
  • 6:00 to 7:00 PM – Drive home, stop and pick up some food, gas, etc.
  • 7:00 to 8:30 PM – Make dinner and just try to decompress from the day.
  • 8:30 to 10 PM – This is a foggy area, sometimes I do yard work when I get home so I might not eat dinner until 9PM.
  • 10:00 to 11:00 PM – Go to 24 Hour Fitness, or go running. I switch every other day.
  • 11:00 to 12:30 AM – Attempt to get some work done (but mostly spazz out and look at old photos).

And that is a typical work day. Sometimes I do a happy hour, or something will come up that changes my time around, but pretty simple. My weekends fly by even faster, before I know it… back to work on Monday. When I break down my times I really could be more efficient and make time for other activities, but where do I start? I want more time to hang out with friend (or make more at this moment). I would like to spend more time doing some outdoor activities, like stand up paddling again… that will kill at least an hour on the lake each day. Let’s not forget that I am single and dating too, where do I fit that time in? Ahhhhrggg! Man, I need surfing again, thats when time just stands still.
